2006 African Nations Cup

Zimbabwe qualified for the 2006 African Nations Cup finals by beating Rwanda 3-1 in Harare on Sept 3rd 2005 to make sure of a berth at next January's tournament.

The win ensured that Zimbabwe finished inside the top three places in their World Cup qualifying group, which is also serving as the qualifiers for next year's Nations Cup finals.

ZIMBABWE however bowed out of the 2006 World Cup race.

Summary: Angola produced one of the biggest shocks in African football by qualifying for the World Cup finals at the expense of Nigeria. Both Nigeria and Angola finished on 21 points but the Palancas Negras went through to Germany courtesy of their superior head-to-head record against the Super Eagles. They beat Nigeria 1-0 in Luanda and drew 1-1 in Abuja. Zimbabwe held their nerve to secure third place but Algeria disappointed yet again and will not be in Egypt next year.
