Sunday blames FA's Gumbo firing
Sunday Marimo
|
FORMER Warriors coach and the first man to take Zimbabwe to the Africa Cup of
Nations in Tunisia in 2004, Sunday Chidzambwa, says ZIFA erred in firing his former
assistant Rahman Gumbo and replacing him with Charles Mhlauri.
And Chidzambwa blames ZIFA's decision to axe Gumbo
for Zimbabwe's failure to qualify for the AFCON finals in Ghana next year.
Gumbo, now the head coach of Malawi champions MTL Wanderers, was fired after the Warriors lost to
Nigeria 3-0 in a 2006 AFCON/World Cup qualifier in Harare, despite having managed to pick up two
draws and a win in the matches against Gabon, Algeria and Rwanda respectively.
Mhlauri succeeded Gumbo and using the foundation the former Highlanders
coach had built, led Zimbabwe to Egypt, where they recorded one win in three games and bowed out in
the first round of the bi-annual competition.
|
Chidzambwa believes ZIFA must have built on that foundation and given Gumbo the resources to work
with the Under 20 and Under 23 coaches for the development of players, who would form the core of the 2010
campaign.
"Rahman had build a foundation and the loss against Nigeria must have been a learning
point for him, yet he was denied that chance. It was all a mistake. "Charles had won the league with CAPS
United but did he have a history in Africa? Rahman had been there both as a player and coach and has
learnt a lot.
"I am not saying that Charles is a bad coach, but he was just rushed. He needed to be an assistant to an experienced person first and then go on his own.
Warriors Out! Mhlauri next?
Charles Mhlauri!
|
ZIMBABWE Football Association (Zifa) chairman, Wellington Nyatanga, confirmed
the soccer governing body's board would meet to discuss the future of national team coach, Charles Mhlauri,
after the match away to Morocco.
Although Nyatanga chose the usual diplomatic stance, his fellow board members told CAJ News Agency that
Mhlauri was likely to face the chop.
Recent board meetings discussed the issue of Mhlauri at length and it is said that a position was
taken that unless Mhlauri managed a win in Morocco, he had to go.
Mhauri's former assistant, Moses Chunga, is reported to be the likely successor on an interim basis,
whilst Zifa are understood to be negotiating with former Warriors goalkeeper, Bruce Grobbelaar.
|
"We are going to have a meeting after the Morocco match to review and come up with ways of improving our
national teams," Nyatanga told CAJ News before the weekend game was played.
"I can't say anything regarding the issue of the coach at the moment because we will have to decide as a board."
Mhlauri told CAJ News before the game that he wasn't under pressure. "I am not under pressure at all because
this is a match like any other we have played before. If Zifa tell me to go, I will simply move on,"
he said. - CAJ News

Supersport sign Zimbabwean international
Shingi Kawondera
|
(August 31, 2006) Supersport United have signed Zimbabwean international striker Shingi Kawondera on a
three-year deal.
The striker previously played for Turkish Super League side Gaziantepspor.
Kawondera signed a two-and-half year contract with the Turkish side but only played for
six months as, it seems, he was not happy in that country.
Kawondera impressed with his showing during the African Nations Cup qualifiers, in
which he was the star his country’ campaign.
He carried his form to the Nations Cup finals playing alongside Benjani Mwaruwari
and was linked to a number of European clubs.

Zimbabwe Warriors fight to the end!
|
A late disallowed goal saw Zimbabwe narrowly miss out on the African
Nations Cup quarter-finals despite beating Ghana 2-1.
Goals by Cephas Chimedza and Benjani gave the Warriors a well deserved victory over the lifeless
Black Stars, whose hopes at the World Cup finals look very dim - a late goal by Baba Adamu was
not enough to salvage their pride.
However it could all have been even better for Zimbabwe had not Joel Lupahla's last minute tap
in not been disallowed for a tenuous offside.

Moments later the 18-year-old scored with a low 20-yard shot that flew in the bottom corner of Gift Muzadzi's goal.
Zimbabwe can be proud of a brave showing which really worried their more highly regarded opponents.
Benjamin Mwaruwari, their Portsmouth striker was quite superb, and the Warriors can find themselves unlucky not to have at least a goal to show for their efforts.

ZIMBABWE Warriors should aim to hold Nigeria!
Zimbabwe must hold Nigeria
|
After the ZIMBABWE’S Warriors second half 2-0 collapse against Senegal, Charles Mhlauri is set to aim to
hold Nigeria to a goaless draw at least with the hopes of a huge Senegal loss to Ghana.
It is expected that Ghana will give a spirited fight for survival to
ensure that the 2006 World Cup debutants are not sent packing after the Senegal clash. A loss for Ghana
would mean elimination from the Nations Cup, while a win for Ghana and a tie or win for the Warriors would keep Zimbabwe's
hopes alive at least for now!
The same way Charles Mhlauri’s men somehow just managed to hang on in
the first half of the Senegal game, thanks to a spirited show at the back by man-of-match James Matola, the Warriors are
expected to give a spirited fight against Nigeria on Friday. Full report

Mhlauri said his Warriors would regroup and fight another day in the Group of Death despite the setback that came with their 0-2 loss at the hands of Senegal last night.
Speaking shortly after the match, Mhlauri said the Warriors should not have been caught on the break on the two occasions that led to the goals.

ZIMBABWE fall to Senegal

(JAN 23, 2006) ZIMBABWE’S Warriors collapsed in the second half after being caught on the break twice in similar fashion in a fiery opening match here last night that will certainly complicate issues in their latest bid to win the Nations Cup finals.
Charles Mhlauri’s men somehow just managed to hang on in the first half, thanks to a spirited show at the back by man-of-match James Matola, but their resistance was broken twice in the final half of this Group D match.
Goals by the lively Henri Camara in the 58th minute and substitute Issa Ba, with his first touch of the match in the 80th minute, sent the Warriors spinning to a defeat that sank them to the bottom of the Group of Death.
But the talking point of the match, and certainly for a very long time
to come, will always be the incredible miss by Warriors’ star forward Benjani Mwaruwari in the 69th minute. Full report

SENEGAL FACE A FOCUSED ZIMBABWE TEAM
|
Senegal, in reaching the 2002 World Cup quarter-finals, have already established themselves on the international stage but anyone who believes Monday's opponents Zimbabwe are continental novices should think again.
In the last African Nations Cup, Zimbabwe and Cameroon fought out a 5-3 thriller even if the southern Africans did finish on the losing side.
And it's easily forgotten that Zimbabwe even on the last day of the qualifiers had a mathematical chance of reaching this year's World Cup.
Senegal, who failed to qualify for this year's World Cup, have dipped in form and Zimbabwe believe they can give the Teranga Lions a run for their money in Monday's Group D fixture.

Mhlauri needs Technical help now!
Charles Mhlauri
|
ZIMBABWE’S Warriors — battered and bruised after their humiliating 1-5 defeat
in Nigeria — quietly slipped back home yesterday from a farcical tour of duty that will have a significant bearing
on their future. Charles Mhlauri and his local band of troops made a low-key return that
was in sharp contrast to the party that welcomed them at Harare International Airport in August
following their triumph in the Cosafa Castle Cup.
The coach’s decision to continue operating a virtual one-man band in the coaching of the Warriors, despite
widespread calls for him to engage an assistant, has also come into sharp focus following that humiliation.
Mhlauri was clearly outwitted by a strong Nigerian technical bench that included some of the finest players
to wear the Super Eagles shirt. Head coach Austin Eguavoen, only in charge of his second match, was helped by former World Cup stars — Samson
Siasia and Daniel "The Bull" Amokachi.
|
Siasia, a former Nigerian midfield star, was roped into the technical team after a successful run with the
country’s Under-20 side which he took to the final of the World Youth Championships in the Netherlands this year.
In contrast, Mhlauri was being helped by a man with no previous coaching experience at this
level of the game — Emmanuel Nyahuma. The former Black Aces goalkeeper is effectively the goalkeeper’s coach in
the technical department of the Warriors and cannot be relied upon to offer expert advice about on-field issues
when the need arises.
Warriors renewed sense of commitment
|
|
The captain of the Warriors of Zimbabwe, Peter Ndlovu has
told the Super Eagles to expect a tough battle when both sides clash in a make-or-break 2006 World
Cup qualifier on October 9 in Abuja.
Nigeria need to beat the Warriors while they hope for an Angolan slip away to Rwanda in Kigali
to guarantee a place in next year's World Cup finals in Germany.
But Ndlovu, who steered Zimbabwe to a convincing 3-1 win over Rwanda at the weekend in Harare,
believes that a renewed sense of commitment from the team is key to a strong outing against the Nigerian team,
who are desperately gunning for a fourth successive appearance at the World Cup finals.
