GERMANY-based national soccer team rightback George Mbwando became the first
foreign-based player to join camp ahead of the African Cup of Nations finals in Egypt in January.
The Jan-regensburg defender arrived in the country yesterday and immediately joined fellow team-mates in camp.
Locally based players are already in camp ahead of the biennial continental soccer showpiece.
The veteran former Alemania Aachen defender last featured for the Warriors in the World Cup/African
Cup of Nations qualifier against the Desert Foxes of Algeria. The Warriors fought gallantly to hold the
Foxes to a 2-2 draw in Oran.
Warriors coach Charles Mhlauri described Mbwando’s arrival as positive.
“It is a good development. We should also be expecting Mike Temwanjira to join
us tomorrow (today). We might also have some South African-based players joining
camp before the Christmas break,” said Mhlauri who has called an enlarged squad,
which will be trimmed before the team departs to Egypt.
The rest of the foreign-based players are expected in camp on December 27. The Warriors
would take on Zambia’s Chipolopolo in an international friendly three days later.
Shingi Kawondera, who has been clubless since he parted company with his Cypriot club Paphos Athletic,
recently signed a pre-season contract with French second division side Lorient and has also joined camp.
CAPS United and Warriors goalkeeper Energy Muramba-doro, who has been doubtful to make the trip to
Egypt due to lack of match fitness, is also in camp.
