Warriors off to Egypt

THE national soccer team is scheduled to leave for Egypt today where they will play the hosts in a friendly match ahead of the African Cup of Nations finals later this month.

Charles Mhlauri’s charges will head for France after the match against the Pharaohs for a training camp being sponsored by Benjani Mwaruwari. Zimbabwe Football Association (Zifa) chairman, Rafik Khan confirmed the Warriors are leaving country. “The team is leaving tomorrow (today) for Egypt where they will play that side.

“Two other friendly matches against Togo and Libya have been confirmed. We want to ensure the team plays more of these games for the technical team to assess the players,” said Khan. The match will be the second for Zimbabwe after playing Zambia a 1-1 draw at the National Sports Stadium on Saturday.

It was not the best match for the home side who showed weaknesses especially in the midfield. Strikers were starved of clean balls. Kaizer Chiefs ace Tinashe Nengomasha held on to the ball longer than required in the center instead of feeding the strikers.

Serbia and Montenegro based striker Mike Temwanjira was pulled out after being introduced as a substitute in a move some fans have criticised. Mhlauri said: “It was a good decision. It was his first time to play for the senior team and the fans were not good for him either. “ I pulled him out for tactical reasons.”
