Zimbabwe international Benjani Mwaruwari has completed a £4.1 million move to English Premiership side Portsmouth from French side Auxerre.

The 27-year-old had been linked with the Premiership club, whose manager Harry Redknapp revealed earlier this week that Mwaruwari was their number one transfer target.

Mwaruwari had also been a target for Premiership sides Wigan, Newcastle United and French Champions Marseille.

The forward was desperate to leave high-flying Auxerre, who lie fourth in Ligue 1, and told BBC that he would prefer to join Premiership strugglers Portsmouth than fellow French side Marseille.

The pacey striker has already now flown to the South Coast to discuss personal terms to conclude the deal.

Agent Willie McKay, who brokered the deal said, "Benjani is already at Portsmouth speaking to them about his personal terms. He is very excited of playing in England and he wants to try and help keep Portsmouth up."
