Zimbabwe’s star striker Benjani Mwaruwari has said he would prefer not to
attend the MTN Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt later this month.
Mwaruwari would rather help his new club, Portsmouth, in their battle against
relegation from the English Premier League.
Mwaruwari signed for Portsmouth last week from French side Auxerre in a club
record £4.1 million deal.

“I do not want to turn my back on my country,” Mwaruwari said, according to
kickoff.com.
“But I want to start my career in England and help Portsmouth get out of relegation
trouble.
“I’m talking to the Zimbabwe manager and so are the club. But it is not easy.”
Mwaruwari was not able to play in Portsmouth’s 1-0 FA Cup third round win over
Ipswich on Saturday, as he is still awaiting a work permit.
Portsmouth’s hopes of avoiding relegation have been boosted by the arrival of
Russian millionaire co-owner Alexandre Gaydamak, who is set to splash further cash during the January transfer
window.
