Should Zimbabwe release Benjani during Nations Cup?

Benjani
Benjani

English Premier League side, Portsmouth, have been battling to keep Warriors striker, Benjani Mwaruwari who is part of the Zimbabwe national team which takes part in the finals of the Africa Cup of Nations in two weeks.

Should he stay at Portsmouth or go to Egypt with the Warriors: Please send your comments to Feedback@zimbabwesoccer.com

Benji should forget about pleasing the beurocrats and the management at portsmouth and make the right decision and play for zimbabwe in the up and coming african nations cup.it would be treason and traitory if he doesnt play for zimbabwe. Benji should know where his bread is buttered.Thats his country of birth and descendance and he owns the zimbabwe football punters/fans a lot.

Pound raQueen raveku dzungaidza musoro wake

Is this the demise/ or the downfall of an exceptional football talent? God forbid Common Warriors!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The answer is a flat NO! the way I look at it Pompey should count themselves lucky if we let him go to face Everton this weekend, we need to fine tune our combinations and formations. This is a FIFA sanctioned tournament and when these European teams sign on African players they do it with full knowledge that the Afcon Cup is held every two years and it will invariably clash with their plans, they also do it knowing that FIFA will compel them to release our players so this is a question of principle. They should treat African players professionally and not subject them to underhand armtwisting and psychological and emotional blackmail.

Benji should realise that he is at Pompey on merit and not by favour so he owes nobody an apology if he makes the decision which he should make and that is to represent his country who need him more now than ever.. its no use providing for your family if you are going to desert them when they need you the most... infact it begins to feel like aida kutivhara, we should learn valuable lessons from countries like Nigeria who have failed to live up to their potential because of a lack of national pride... and people like Fabrice Akwa who have served their countries consistently and unwaveringly against heavy odds over the years...... look at them now, they are headed for Germany 2006, a fitting tribute to a galant son of the Angolan soil.. and besides have you seen how the English are so proud of their national side, even predicting World Cup triumph out of thin air, ever heard of Rooney, Becks, Lampard or Gerard opting out of national committments? the lads practically fall over themselves trying to secure starting places..... its a wonderful thing playing for your country, bringing hope to millions of Zimbabweans in these difficult times, for any one to deny us that is simply criminal.... and Benji you don't want to be an accomplice!

Lloyd Masunda (Harare, Zimbabwe)

He should play for the Warriors. Portsmouth will have him for longer than the duration of the Nations Cup and he is one of our key players. Without him we will be toothless in attack as Shingi won't manage alone.

Charles Mirimbo(Harare, Zimbabwe)

HE SHOULD PLAY FOR HIS COUNTRY!

TNIGE (Bristol, United Kingdom)

Since when did one player help a team out of relegation? A team is composed of 11 players, and the presence of Benjani does not mean manna has fallen on Fratton Park. I think he should put his country first because he and other members of the Zimbabwe Football Team have worked hard to get where they are, so why stop now? Despite the thousands of pounds or whatever wage he is on, he should have that Zim Love in him. Whatever he does at Portsmouth whether good or bad, Zimbabwe as a nation will see him as a role model and an ambassador . So i think he owes the nation a favour of just playing at the nations cup. Portsmouth i am sure will manage without him, because they can still play good games and win without Benjani.

Yes and No! I understand that he has just made a club record move to Portsmouth for 4.1 million and he wants to help his squad fight relegation as they lie 18th in the table, Fine. Let him go for the match against Everton on the 14th, then for the rest of AFCON he should be with the team.

3 Reasons Why we should not let Benji Go; Benji is the best striker we have right now and FIFA rules say that national teams should field they're strongest teams (echo of the ICC and Zimbabwe Cricket Union). FIFA even provides the power to National Teams to ban players when they are wanted for National Duty. Portsmouth will brave out of relegation and they have a strong team (strong enough to survive that is). They have 8, yes 8 strikers on their books EXCLUDING Collins Mbesuma and Lomana Lua Lua who will be at AFCON. So you see they do not need him and we do. Harry Redknapp when he made this Transfer knew that this was going to happen, and it has.

The Question then becomes of commitment who is Benji more committed to his Country or Portsmouth? Who is Charles Mhlauri committed to? Obviously the answer to the latter is Zimbabwe, therefore he should not let Benji go. The former however isn't sure whether to put Country or Club first, which is understandable because they pay his wages. A chance to represent ones country at an International Tournament is an enormous privilege that only 23 men every two years can have. Its an enormous task for Zimbabwe especially being in the group of death, so we certainly can't let our best Striker go.

The problem here really is about the scheduling of this tournament, but that's another topic all together.
