Kaizer Chiefs sign Zimbabwe Soccer Star- Chimedza

Cephas Chimedza

(May 17th ,2005) TOP South African Premiership side, Kaizer Chiefs have signed reigning Soccer Star of the Year, Cephas Chimedza on a threeyear contract.

However, CAPS United general manager Joe Makuvire yesterday said that he was not aware of the player’s move.

“It’s news to me because the player is still committed to play for CAPS United. We have not sealed a deal with Kaizer Chiefs. He (Cephas Chimedza) is back from the South Africa and we have heard nothing from Kaizer Chiefs. Bobby (Motaung – Kaizer Chiefs manager) is in the habit of jumping the gun.

“We are going to announce any developments at the appropriate time. The player has even indicated that intends to even play for us today (yesterday),” said Makuvire.

“The huge gap on the left back position has finally been filled and I am proud to announce the signing of a highly qualified player in the Zimbabwean. We have finally found a solution for the left back position,” Kaizer Chiefs manager, Bobby Motaung, said in a statement posted on the club website yesterday.

Said Motaung: “Chiefs is proud to be associated with a player of Chimedza’s calibre. He is an international player who has also played for a league championship winning side CAPS United”.

The club said that the roving leftback had signed a three year contract with Kaizer Chiefs with an option of a fouryear contract.

The club said the player would be unveiled in the annual Vodacom Challenge later in the year.

Chimedza was embroiled in a salary dispute with CAPS United in March. The player was demanding a $35 million signing on fee for a six month contract. He also demanded a $10 million monthly salary.

The former Dynamos defender was scheduled to go trials with English side Sheffield United.

However, the deal fell through, as the player did not have enough Warriors caps. Chimedza had a fruitful 2004 season at CAPS where he won his first Premiership title.

He also won the Buddie Challenge Cup and the ZIFA Unity Cup after moving from the Harare rivals Dynamos and capped a fine season by grabbing the Soccer Star of the Year award.

Chimedza will join Tinashe Nengomasha at Kaizer Chiefs.
