Zimbabwe names 10 S.A based for World Cup Qualifier

Zimbabwe Soccer

There were no major changes in the Warriors squad that will play Gabon on 5 June in the World Cup and African Nations Cup qualifiers with all South African based players retaining their places in the squad.

The Zimbabwe team, whose local based players called up in the squad are due to start training on Tuesday morning, recently moved up to ninth place on the continent in the latest FIFA rankings displacing Mali after the two COSAFA Castle Cup wins in Windhoek.

The South African based players who form the bulk of the squad are expected in on Wednesday while the European based players arriving a day later.

Foreign-based players have been requested to come in early to camp as their respective leagues have already ended.
But there still remains a doubt over the availability of former Jomo Cosmos striker Benjani Mwaruwari whose club Auxerre will be involved in the French Cup Final on the same weekend.
"We are yet to reach any concrete conclusion with Benjani but that should be settled by the end of the week. We need him as much as his club needs him, so it will be a matter of discussing it," said a diplomatic Warriors manager Ernest Sibanda though it is certain Mwaruwari will want to play in the French Final.
Former Hellenic goalkeeper Energy Murambadoro who is yet to play club football since November last year due to his long standing dispute with Israeli side Bnei Sakhnin still finds a place in the squad and is favoured to keep goal.
In defence Santos centreback Zvenyika Makonese who completed a memorable debut season in foreign lands is virtually guaranteed a run in the team along with Edelbert Dinha.
Kaizer Chiefs bound left wingback Cephas Chimedza currently recovering from an ankle injury is also in the squad alongside Charles Yohane of Wits University.
Championship winning Tinashe Nengomashe of Kaizer Chiefs will yet again fight it out for the anchorman role with Sundowns’ Esrom Nyandoro.
But young Highlanders midfielder is certain to miss out as he is currently on a four-week trial in Cyprus.
